Target Audiences and Research.

T A R G E T   A U D I E N C E

A target audience is a person or a group of people a piece of writing/ film/ information is intended to reach. In other words, it is important for a writer, director or producer to know who will be reading his or her piece. This audience is the person or group of people that the writer is aiming for, or trying to reach. When a writer for example knows the target audience, he or she will shape both the purpose and tone of the writing to match the audience's needs and, sometimes, expectations.

You can never just have one target audience, because "everybody" each like their individual things, for example a person may like horror films but despise drama films. Here are some examples of demographic and psychographic attributes:

Consumer Demographics examples
  • Age- Age plays an integral role in how companies promote their products online and offline. Segmenting your market by age often involves diversifying pricing and color options, and adjusting features to fit the anticipated needs and expectations of each age group.
  • Gender- While the target market for a given product can include females and males, one gender may represent a larger share of a company's target market. Businesses can segment their markets by gender, and come up with variations of their products devoted to serving a specific gender or alter their marketing campaigns to appeal to the male or female segment.
  • Occupation- Businesses who offer products and services to individuals and businesses in specific professions or industries may use their demographic data to segment their markets by occupation
  • Household income- When companies develop pricing strategies for their brands and products, they consider the income levels of their target markets. Salary, or income level, is an example of a demographic segmentation businesses use when they prepare to introduce a product to the market or initiate a sale.
  • Marital Status- A company might discover that married individuals are more willing to pay higher prices than single individuals, or that single customers purchase a certain product more frequently than married people.
A target market is a specific group of people that you have determined to be part of your customer base. These projections are based on demographic studies and market research done with various sample groups. There are several factors used in determining a target market.

Age

As people grow older, their tastes and preferences change. Entertainment is an industry that frequently uses the age demographic to determine a target market. For example, a television show may be given a particular time slot because market research shows that people ages 13 to 18 watch television during that time and that is the target market the show is going for.

Sex

Breaking down your target market by sex can be dangerous if you do not do your market research. If you believe that your target market is female, then much of your advertising will be geared towards a female audience. This tends to alienate the male audience and eliminates any chance your product may have had at appealing to males.

Columbia Pictures is an American production and distribution studio of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a division of Sony Entertainment's Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. This companies films are aimed at an older target audience due to their mature themes and language used within. I believe that if we had a larger budget Columbia would be a great subsidiary to consider.

Disney is the sort of company that makes fantasy, action and adventure films for families to sit down and watch of all ages. Unfortunately our group need to be realistic and know that the content of our film will not appeal to the wider demographic (Younger children and senior citizens over 50.) Although due to Disney being such a large conglomerate, we need to think of the realism and understand that due to our context and mature themes, Disney would not appeal to us as a distributor.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is a subsidiary of Fox Inc., which is owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation Ltd. Throughout its long history, the company has enjoyed a reputation as a major Hollywood motion picture studio. Because of the companies demographic, it is a possibility that 20th century fox could be a distributor for our film. This is because they have a large range of film genres that appeal to different audiences, creating variety and therefore showing that our film could possibly be distributed by this company.

Paramount Pictures Corporation is an American film studio, television production company, and motion picture distributor, consistently ranked as one of the "Big Six" film studios of Hollywood. It is a subsidiary of U.S. media conglomerate Viacom. This company, much alike 20th century fox, has a wide demographic including people of all ages. Due to this, I believe that using Paramount as a distributor would give us an advantage as they already have an existing fan base.

I would recommend that our demographic would be young adults that are 15 and over. This is because after watching films made by universal for example some of the movies have got mature themes in, this is a perfect company to look at within the film industry as our film we are making needs to follow the same guidelines.

Warner Bros pictures have been at the forefront of the motion picture industry since its inception and continues to be a leading creative force in the industry. Warner Bros. Pictures produces and distributes a wide-ranging slate of some 18-22 films each year, employing a business paradigm that mitigates risk while maximizing productivity and capital. This company has a wide target audience however they choose to focus more on the 12 and over range, creating suspense films, actions and thrillers. I believe that despite our film being a thriller, I believe that Warner Bros could not distribute our film as they already have a set fan base of age 12 and over.
