“A fleet, no-nonsense rescue thriller”

Film critic Steven Rea writes that Taken is a “no-nonsense” rescue thriller. We aim for our plot to be described like this – as a group we decided that having a far-fetched plot would be pointless as we have a low budget and it would be difficult to shoot a dramatic short film especially as we have a short amount of time to do it in. We feel confident in our decision to have a simple plot (the main character has her drink spiked and is kidnapped during a night out) seen as Taken is such a highly successful film and had a simple storyline similar to ours.

“It's very well-made”
“Liam Neeson brings the character a hard-edged, mercilessly focused anger”
“She's off-screen most of the time”

Several reviews state that Neeson’s portrayal of character Bryan Mills was superb. He portrays the character as “hard-edged” with “focused anger”. Whilst we aren’t having a protective figure looking after Grace such as a parent or a friend, we are planning on having a “hard-edged” character that is Grace’s kidnapper.

“Thrilling throughout the movie, keeps you on the edge of your seat”

The themes of kidnap and danger keep the audience interested as it enables the ‘thriller’ feeling to carry on throughout the film. There is always something thrilling and dramatic going on in Taken, from his daughter getting kidnapped while on the phone to her father to dramatic chases through Paris. In our own film we plan on using similar techniques to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, however less dramatic as we are on a lower budget. For example, we will have Grace’s kidnapper pursuing her in the night club on her night out.

“Rapid-fire editing helps”
“There’s not even a main bad guy for Bryan to pursue”

Effective editing is a good factor in ensuring the film is giving off the correct vibes. For example, like the quote from the Beyond Hollywood review said “rapid-fire editing helps”. During post production of our own film, we plan on using elliptical editing to show the passing of time from day to night as Grace and her friend prepare for the night out and fast paced editing when they are getting ready. We also plan on using fast paced editing when Grace’s drink has been spiked to show she is losing control and is in danger.
The second quote from Beyond Hollywood states that there isn’t one specific ‘bad guy’ for Bryan to pursue, however that won’t be the case in our film. We are having only one antagonist in the film as we feel that the audience will be more engaged in the story line if there is only one bad person to focus their anger on.
