Research into Genre- Sound.

Sound in a Thriller film.
Within a Thriller film, the music is used to create tension and suspense within the audience and to convey scared and frightened emotions from them. The music helps to build a climax when approaching an intense or scary scene within the film. They often include synthesised sounds, this helps to create the mood for the individual scene. the most commonly used sounds within thrillers are dark, eerie sounds. The music usually starts off in a slow pace then gradually speeds up its pace as events happen on screen. This creates the tension and builds up climax.
Some sounds within a thriller are also used to create understanding and meaning for the audience. This then enables the audience to interact with the film and create a response toward the film. Mainly this will include individual sounds or soundtracks in which help the audience understand what is occurring. Most of the sounds are used to evoke characters feelings and emotions, further getting a response from the audience. This is also used to often symbolise both the protagonists and antagonists movements in the scene. By carefully using the sounds employed in the scene, it helps to build suspense and tension.

Diegetic sound- sound which the characters can hear. Diegetic sound can be anything that you would hear within the film world, whether it be a telephone ring, dialogue, dogs barking etc.

Diegetic sound is usually used to make the scenes realistic and meaningful however the sounds can also have hidden connotations. For example, non stop rain can connote sadness and stress. The pitter patter of slow rain could connote a long wait or tension and suspense. This can also be known through shots as pathetic fallacy, creating mood and atmosphere from the weather.

This is a very good example of non-diegetic sound which does not exist within the story of the film, but is put onto the film post-production. This type of sound could be in the form of a music soundtrack, a voice-over or extra sounds which enhance the meanings and elements of the film. is a very good example of non-diegetic sound and how it is used to make the scene more interesting and exciting. In this video the sound of the balloons make the scene much more exciting as the sounds are contrapuntal sound, meaning that you would not expect to hear them in the following scene.
A good example of sound within thrillers is Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws'. This is because it uses sound to create suspenseful atmosphere and since then the motif of the shark has become a widely known sound for a suspenseful atmosphere.
Here is the clip with and without the music, it dramatically shows the difference.
