Codes & Conventions of Thriller - Characters

There are many characters in a thriller film that are involved in order to create a typical thriller feeling e.g. tension, fear etc. Below is a list of characters that you would likely see appearing in a thriller genre film:
· Convicts
· Soldiers
· Spies
· Law Enforcement Officers
· Stalkers
· Prison Inmates
· Men associated with danger
· Psychotic characters
· Criminals
· Innocent citizens that get dragged into danger
· Assassins
· A type of hero—someone who tries to help and do the right thing (even if they put themselves at risk)

An example of a typical thriller film is Taken (2008) that includes several of the above characters.
The Hero—Bryan (Kim’s father) - After his daughter Kim is kidnapped during a phone call with her, Bryan sets out to find her and stops at nothing. He attempts to track her down, engaging in fights and killing people in the process.

Innocent citizen— Kim is the innocent character in this film. She goes to Paris with her friend in the hope of following U2 on their tour. Instead, she is kidnapped and sold to an Albanian prostitution ring.

Law Enforcement Officers— Bryan is a type of LEO as he is an extremely skilled detective who was able to track down Marko (Kim’s kidnapper) and punish him by torturing him for information and then leaving him to die. Another LEO is Sam (a former colleague of Bryan’s).  He is able to deduce from a description and voice who Kim’s kidnapper is, which therefore enables Bryan to track him down.

Stalker— The stalker in this film is Peter, a young man who pretends he wants to taxi-share in order to find out the girl’s location and details. He then finds out that they are home alone and is able to pass this information on to the kidnappers.

Men associated with danger— There are several men associated with danger, e.g Marko (the kidnapper), Peter (the stalker), Abil (a prostitute bidder) and potentially even Bryan as he murders people during the film.
