Thriller Film Poster Codes & Conventions - Lighting

LIGHTING
Lighting used in thriller film posters is often low key lighting to create a mysterious and tense atmosphere as the audience will be not be able to fully understand who or what the danger is.

Not only does low key lighting provide the intended atmosphere, it also acts as a way to encourage the audience to see the film – if the poster has the ability to create mystery and suspense for the audience, it may influence them to go and watch the film to see if it is just as good.

The lighting offers characters a kind of cover between them and the audience. The full identity of the character cannot often be fully shown as it could risk the feelings of tension and suspense to dissipate which would be a let down to the audience.

An example of good lighting used in a film poster is Shutter Island (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iaYLCiq5RM) where Leonardo DiCaprio's character is featured on the front in low key lighting so only part of his face is revealed.
