Cinematic Sequence

I wanted to create a cinematic sequence to practice ahead of creating one for my title sequence. The whole point of creating a cinematic sequence is to showcase something with detailed shots to allow to audience to grasp details of a product in a short space of time (a car in this case, but a bar in our film.) It may seem that the two have no link whatsoever, despite that being true that isn't the point. Practicing filming will always be beneficial as you are practicing shooting, and you can only get better via practice, i will try to shoot more cinematic sequences before filming the one for our film to make it as good as i possibly can. Shooting a cinematic sequence can also help with editing as you are having to slow clips down, stabilise them and cut them to the music to make the whole sequence appealing to the audience.

Club Purism lighting installation.

After being able to film within Club Purism using Devils Events lighting we were asked to make a promotion video from the new lighting installation designed by the owner of Devils Events, Gabriel Hambleton. Charlotte filmed the installation then along with Elliott, edited it the following night. The owner of Devils Events and the owner of Club Purism said that they were more than pleased with the video and thanked us both very much.

Lighting- Can possibly use.

Lucky enough, i have the ability to use any of these lighting fixtures for our film 'Saving Grace'. This is because i work alongside Devil's Event Lighting, which supply professional lighting installations across the United Kingdom. Being able to have this opportunity means that i can incorporate the lights into our film, giving it the desired look needed. Because we have scenes within Nightclubs or Bars we are required to have products like these as it would look misleading not to. This then allows us the realism of Nightlife.

Equinox PowerBatten RGB (Wash Fixture)

Onboard features include colour mixing to create soft washes from its rich colour palette, and chase programs controlled in auto mode or activated by music. Several different chase programs are included and can be selected by the control panel along with brightness and speed.

Acme RGBW Butterfly Spider (Moving Centrepiece Sweeper Beam Effect)

The Acme Butterfly is a dynamic multi-beam effect featuring two sweeping LED bars, each loaded with four individually controllable narrow beams. Dispensing eight red, green, blue and white intense, sharp long-throw beams the butterfly cuts through the air with ease. The four button menu  system gives the user control of master/slave functions, and the fixture can be also be operated in sound active and DMX modes.

Below is a video that i made to demonstrate how the Butterfly Spider (Small, set colour version) works.

Below is a video that Charlotte created to demonstrate how the 250 Kryptons operate in a nightlife environment.

Costumes.

Costumes

Costumes within a film are very important, they tell us not only information about the character that is wearing them, but information about the film itself. When the word 'costume' is used it is mainly associated with fancy dress and halloween costumes etc. However costumes in a film is what ever characters are wearing, and can vary in different types of genre. Our film Saving Grace is of the Thriller Genre, meaning the film is intended to make the audience inquisitive and possibly scared, however the scary association with costumes is not what we use in our film, as many other films also don't.

Our film is about two teenage girls that go for a night out and things go wrong for the characters. Due to the main characters being females the clothing/costume will be feminine, and the different types of clothes will vary due to the different types of scenes.

The first type of costume our main character Grace wears is a dark navy jumper and black jeans, a casual look which is meant to relate to the audience being teenagers and the casual clothes they wear when at home. When wearing this costume Grace is on the sofa watching television relaxed and on the phone to her friend. She wears the dark coloured clothing to make sure her clothing doesn't stand out and to ensure that her clothing is something of which the audience can relate to. This clothing colour was also convenient due to them being dark, therefore when we took the photo for the Film Poster the clothing blended into the background and Grace herself stood out and grabbed the audiences attention.

Research behind costumes.

Nightclub Typical Dress Code.

  • Avoid wearing sportswear.
  • Collared shirts are the safest option to choose however jumpers, sweaters and fashionable tops could be considered ok as long as bold slogans or logos are avoided.
  • Depending on the area in which you go out to, clubs will take different approaches on what you should and should not wear. Some may allow smart V neck T-shirts or Polo shirts providing they are worn with a suitable jacket. This rule will more likely be used in places such as London, and does not apply for Barnsley.
(Below is an example of a more strict dress code)

  • Again the general rule here is choose wisely, it’s not advisable to turn up in a Tee shirt that looks like you’ve been sleeping in it or wearing it to the gym!
  • Trousers and chinos are always allowed, and if you are planning on wearing jeans remember to choose smart ones as many nightclubs will refuse entry to anyone wearing ripped or baggy jeans unless you’re going for that scruffy but trendy look which you can probably get away with in areas like Shoreditch, Hoxton or Hackney.
  • Don’t forget your choice of shoes and be carefull with Converse, Plimsoles, Vans or Boat shoes as some clubs will still see them as too casual. Not only that but most clubs will not let you in if you’re wearing soft soled shoes as they are prone to scuffing the dance floor!
  • Photo I.D. is also essential as nearly all nightclubs have a challenge 21 or 25 entry policy.
Within our film ' Saving Grace' we will strictly follow these dress codes on our two main characters Grace and Becky in order to have more of a realistic approach. We will ensure that our protagonist Grace fits the dress code scheme within the build up of our film to then enhance the difference in her costume towards the end of the film. This will create a lot of sympathy from the audience as they can see that she has changed completely, almost like she has been transformed into a different person.

Prop List for Film

Prop List

The following powerpoint slides contain descriptions and images of just few of the props that we will use in our film, 'Saving Grace'. Some of the props show large significance in the film and are included in some of the main scenes, such as the watch where it is seen in two locations and gives away who the person is that takes Grace. The props are as listed:

Possible filming locations.

Funky Buddha Barnsley

Funky Buddha Barnsley is a colourful, neon lit bar situated across from Barnsley Sixth Form College. Its specialities include a wide range of cocktails and drinks. The purple lit bar creates a calm atmosphere whilst contrasting with the vibrant colours of the alcohol bottles. This would be a good bar to film in as it is spacious but can easily be made to look full from different angles and shots. Through the daytime it is also known as a place to eat food, with excellent cuisine. Being able to film here would be a privillage as our film would look more realistic.

 Club Purism- The Theatre Royal

Club Purism is a nightclub situated within the middle of town, therefore making it busy. Despite this nightclub being a challenge to gain access to film in, we believe that it would be the perfect filming location. Again like The Funky Buddha Barnsley, the club has neon colours that are a vibrant purple colour. This nightclub is very spacious, therefore to make our film look realistic we would be required to find a lot of extras.

Whispers Lounge
Whispers Nightclub is a nightclub and lounge bar known for it's history as Japanese Whispers. Including DJ's, professional lighting and vivid colours. Due to Whispers trying to climb back up the ladder of success, i believe that filming here would be incredibly easy to organise. Although it is not as popular as Club Purism or The Funky Buddha, Whispers is a prime location for us to use.

Hadelliotte Production Company Logo.

Production Company Logo Design Stages

This is the design process I went through in order to create our official production company, Hadelliotte. I added colour to the greyscale designs, one red and navy colour scheme (which i believe looks classy and professional.) One with multiple colours to represent different continents around the globe and the final design with a black and white design for simplicity as every company should be recognisable in their chosen colours as well as black and white. I wanted to create a brand which would be recognisable when looking at the logo.

Treatment for 'Saving Grace'.

Treatment
Saving Grace

  • Our short 5 minute film is called 'Saving Grace'. We picked the title due to the fact that our main character is drugged then abducted, taken away by a stranger. Even though Grace wasn't saved in our film, the possible ways of saving Grace are obvious and should be made obvious by the audience. E.g her friend, Becky should have known where Grace was at all times while they were out.
  • Our film 'Saving Grace' will last around 5 minutes, keeping it short but inlcuding detail that will make it the quality of a full film.
  • The Audience of our film would typicaly be aged 12-30, as they are the predicted ages of people who would typically enjoy films of the Thriller Genre. Our film doesn't have a gender bias, but may be more enjoyed my females as it includes scenes that females relate to more, such as the girls getting ready for their night out by putting lipstick on etc. Our flm 'Saving Grace' has an age rating of 12A, meaning that the film isn't suitable for children under the age of 12, unless they are accompanied by an adult. The message portrayed in the film is very discreet and doesn't include what happens to Grace after she is taken by the stranger, for moral purposes. However the film does show both of the girls drinking and one of them getting spiked, however this is to raise awareness.
  • We decided that the most suitable Distributor for our film would be 'Warp Films'. Warp Films distribute exciting and sometimes inappropriate films that aren't distributed or suitable for major conglomerates such as Paramount or Universal, both of the Big Six. They are based in both London and Sheffield, which makes it more efficient. Our film is very low budget as it is a Sixth Form College project, and it doesn't include any high profile celebrities, which means that conglomerates such as Paramount wouldn't even consider our film. However a lower status Distributor such as Warp Films would possibly distribute our film as it includes extreme settings such as a nightclub and includes drinking and has a certain message that we think they would like to distribute.
  • There are multiple elements that stand out in our film from the overall content to shots and angles. The main thing that stands out in our film that diffrenciates itself from other shots films in media is the fact that some of it is filmed in a nightclub. This location isn't used often due to the quality of shots however research has helped us understand what the shots will be like when we film. We use a time-lapse towards the beginning of the film, this is to show the difference in time so the audience knows that time has passed in the film. We also use significant props, for example in the film the boy that drugs Grace and takes her away from the bar wears a watch, and earlier on in the film we include a close up of it, we do the same later on in the film similar to a Graphic Match, this makes the audience realise that it is the same boy from earlier on in the bar who spikes her drink. Finally, another example of a suggested element is the Graphic Match at the very beginning and the very end of our short film. The film starts with an Aerial shot of Grace in the unknown boy's bed, with no emotion on her face and zooming in whilst she is talking. The shot at the very end of the film is the exact same whilst Grace is talking however zooms outwards rather than inwards.

'Saving Grace' Synopsis.

The film begins with an Aerial shot of Grace laying in a bed, with no emotion on her face, the camera zooms out and shows a messy room with her clothes on the floor beside the bed. While the zoom out happens Grace says "Have you ever woken up not knowing where you are?... Have you ever woken up with no memory of the night before?... Have you ever woken up with no emotion?.." The camera fades to black, then fades from black to reveal the next scene.

There is a medium shot of Grace sitting on her sofa in her living room showing her watching Television. Then is a close up shot of Grace's phone while it rings next to her on the sofa. The camera follows Grace's phone as she answers it and has a conversation with her friend ***, they arrange a night out the same night. There is a low angle shot of the sun setting as a time lapse, showing the clear time difference. Next is a jump cut that shows the girls getting ready in Grace's room, showing extreme close up shots of the girls applying makeup and putting their shoes on etc. Then is a shallow focus shot of the girls getting ready in the background and a close up of the phone as Grace gets a text from a boy named Josh, the text reads 'See u at the bar in 20.'

Shot of the girls shoes entering what is clearly a taxi, fades and shows the girls shoes taking them out of the taxi. The girls meet up with 3 boys as soon as they get out of the taxi, which is a medium shot, also an establishing shot of the outside of the bar. The shot reveals what the boys look like, one is wearing a white shirt, one is wearing a baseball cap and the other is wearing a necklace.Camera pans downwards to the boys shoes and they're all wearing the same black/white adidas trainers. The camera stays focused on all the boys shoes as the whole group enters the bar. Grace is talking to a boy when the camera switches to a shot of the boy with the baseball cap staring and frowning from across the bar, a sign of jealousy. The camera zooms in on the lights from the door and fades to black and the music from the bar becomes much clearer. A medium shot shows Grace talking to her friend Becky leaning against a table while the lights are flashing behind them. A close up shot of a boys shoes is shown (one of the three boys Grace & Becky met outside the bar) the camera follows the shoes across the bar as the boy walks as a close up. The shoes meet with Grace's, however Grace's shoes clearly show that she isn't facing the boy. The camera pans upwards from Grace's shoes and stops at Grace's hand. She is holding a drink, the camera stays perfectly still as the rest of the bar is full of movement. In the same shot the boy's hand moves in towards Grace's drink and drops a small pill in it, the camera focuses on the boy's watch for a second. Grace picks her drink up and the camera follows her hand as she drinks it. The camera pans away from grace and into the lights as it blurs them relating to Grace. 'Stay High' begins playing as a close up of Grace is used to show her reactions, lights blur together and jump cuts show her emotions.

A medium shot shows Grace being taken out of the bar stumbling away from her friend Becky by a boy with the same shoes as before. The camera is on the floor as it shows the two walking away from the bar and towards the car. A medium shot shows the boy putting Grace into the back of his car but not revealing above his waist not to give away which of the boys it is. (Audience assumes it would be the boy that was looking jealous across from the bar). Then fades to black, fades from black and shows the boy holding the steering wheel and the watch from earlier is revealed. The camera pans round slowly and shows the boys other hand with a cigarette out of the window, then shows the boy with the white shirt as he blows smoke out of the window. The camera stops panning when Grace is shown laying on the back seat looking dazed, it then zooms in slowly on her eye, as she closes it. The shot fades into a shot of her closed eye the next morning, as she opens it, then the camera zooms out slowly and reveals exactly the same shot as the beginning, when the camera stops zooming out, Grace says "Have you ever?".
